What is a trial balance?

The trial balance is a summary table that contains all accounts with:

• Total debit
• Total credit
• Balance (debit or credit)

Purpose

The trial balance is used to verify that accounting is balanced: total debits must equal total credits.

It is generated from the general ledger.
